Herald Sun Too Weak To Admit Screw Up

Much hilarity ensued tonight when the Herald Sun apparently “inadvertently” revealed the winner of the Gold Logie award.

At 11:40pm, they released a statement:

“At no time did the Herald Sun publish the name of the winner on its website, iPad app or in Twitter.”

Oh really? What about this screen capture at 10:08pm?

Sure looks like you published the name to me!

Of course, the statement goes on to blame Google:

“However, during the live testing, a link to an embargoed story naming the winner was momentarily created and published by Google.”

Seriously Herald Sun, just have the balls to admit you screwed up! You’d look a lot better right now if you weren’t inventing a very weak cover story.

Fail.

UPDATE: Simon Pristel, editor of the Herald Sun has made further statement this morning:

“It turns out that Google had somehow searched into our system and found the story that was published in the paper but had never been published on the website and ninemsn.com.au – which is the official website of Channel 9, the broadcaster – has run it up fully on their website.”

Is Simon actually saying that Google can now read the actual printed newspaper – which wouldn’t have been on the presses yet?

Google can search physical newspapers that haven’t been printed yet?

And you know, it WAS on their website.

Give it up Herald Sun. You’re digging a bigger hole for yourself, and looking stupider and stupider all the time.

As stated by Mark Newton, it’s pretty simple:

There’s a bit of a running gag in our house to speak in spoonerisms, just for a giggle.

Spoonerisms – (or ironically, Roonerspisms) – are the “art” of swapping the first letter or sound at the front of each word in a phrase – (or even within a single word) – around to make something – (potentially) – funny out of it.

For example, my name would become Wichael Myres. Or the television show “Futurama” becoming “Ruture Fama”.

Imagine how hard I laughed when I saw these at the supermarket:

Dandenong Road Just Got A Lot Longer

In the world of online mapping, such as Google Maps, or the excellent NearMap, we always see errors where various images are combined into a single scrollable map.

Like roads that don’t quite match up, or strange wingless aircraft.

It’s all because it would be too hard and time consuming for a human to go through every single photo, and manually match them up. Even if a human tried, because things move between when each photo was taken, it would still happen.

So, computers do it, and they get it wrong too, like wrongly labelled roads for instance? Courtesy of Google Maps, here’s the main highway out of Waurn Ponds, a southern suburb of Geelong (click for larger view):

Dandenong Road? Out past the south western outskirts of Geelong?

I suppose technically if you keep following that road it will get you to Dandenong eventually, but it doesn’t meet up with what is really called “Dandenong Road”.

Tweaking required Google, but thanks for the giggles.

When Your Music Really Blows!

I was wandering around Bunnings this afternoon, after finding a price on a new mixer tap to replace a seriously stuffed tap in our kitchen, when I happened upon this little gem of tackiness:

A tower fan. With an “MP3 Input” – more likely, just a 3.5mm audio input jack.

And speakers. And a clock. Probably has alarms too!

Who would buy such a thing?
