In recent weeks, we have seen a number of fatal accidents in various forms of motor sport. Given the high safety standards employed in the sport these days, fortunately, such situations are few and far between.

Indeed, where fatalities were common in the early years of the sport, they are most uncommon in the modern era. This is why the motor racing community is in such shock, to have two high profile deaths in quick succession.

High profile or not, every death is felt deeply.

With the recent NASCAR incident involving Kyle Busch and Ron Hornaday fresh in our minds, I have personally been contemplating just what could have happened in that incident.

A similar style of impact that was endured by Hornaday claimed the life of Dale Earnhardt Sr in 2001:

The structure of cars, and other ancillary safety systems has improved dramatically, even in the ten years since – and we thought the cars were super safe back then.

What we learn from these accidents helps the authorities take action to make sure they don’t happen again. Systems such as the HANS device were introduced to most major forms of racing as a direct result of accidents like Earnhardt’s.

As for what Kyle Busch did, without a HANS device, what might have happened to Hornaday, given the similarities to Earnhardt’s crash? One accident and what we learn from it can prevent injury or death from the next similar accident.

However, it’s not just the obvious things that can take a driver from us, such as the heart attack that claimed 1967 Formula One champion Denny Hulme at the 1992 Bathurst 1000:

Denny was one of my heroes, and it was heartbreaking to watch his life end, live on television in front of my eyes. He had reported on the radio that he didn’t feel well, and was suffering from blurred vision. A silent time bomb nobody knew about.

For this reason, the health and fitness of drivers is a critical safety factor that is taken into consideration.

The lesson is there for all of us – whether we be racing drivers or not – take care, look after yourself, and look after others on the roads.

The simplest things can take away more than we realise.

In the midst of the current debacle of last weekend’s 48 hour grounding of the airline as part of ongoing industrial action, it is worth remembering that one part of the fleet – VH-OQA “Nancy-Bird Walton”, the first Airbus A380 in the fleet – has actually been grounded for exactly one year awaiting repairs.

The wait has been humourously “personified” this week with the parody Twitter account Qantas_VH_OQA, where a depressed and bitter “Nancy” has been bitching and moaning about being stranded in Singapore for so long, and displaying an open disdain for Qantas CEO Alan Joyce.

Funny stuff.

Although repairs are apparently now well underway, and OQA is expected back in the air around February 2012, on this anniversary it is worth remembering exactly what happened to her, via the ABC’s Four Corners, which reported on the incident and the ongoing investigation earlier this year.

Interesting to see old names like Colin Bond, the late Peter Brock, Dick Johnson, and Win Percy strutting their stuff when cars were flexible enough to lead to keeping all four wheels on the road becoming difficult!

The Mallala round shown here was the competition debut of the Nissan GT-R in Australia – a vehicle regulated out of the championship by the end of 1992.

Also love the commentary over the package by Mike Raymond – done in a way that only Mike Raymond could!

Delving back again into my archive of video, I’ve stumbled across a great piece about the return of Peter Brock to Holden in 1991, after a year with BMW and two with Ford between 1988 and 1990. After losing engineering support with Andy Rouse moving to Toyota in the British series in 1991, Brock needed to make a change.

Enter Perkins Engineering, run by Larry Perkins – Brock’s former engineer and team-mate between 1982 and early 1985. Perkins had all the gear, but no funding. Brock had all the funding, but no gear. The marriage of convenience was born, and Brock returned to Holden.

Despite some reasonable results, the season wasn’t the best for the Perkins Engineering Mobil-backed team of 1991, and they went their separate ways again for 1992, with Brock holding onto the cars to form Advantage Racing, and Perkins returning to his 1990-built chassis.

But the prodigal son had returned to Holden, and the gods were appeased!

As an interesting note point of history, this segment was originally prepared to be shown on the Seven Network during their coverage of the opening round of the 1991 season from Sandown. However, due to coverage of the First Gulf War breaking into normal programming, approximately 30 minutes was trimmed from the start of the Sandown coverage. This segment was dropped, and was then shown as part of the coverage of the second round from Symmons Plains – notice the little piece tacked onto the end about how the “new team” went at Sandown.

In my continuing efforts to restore and digitise as much Bathurst 500/1000 footage that I can get my hands onto, I have been working lately on footage from the 1991 Tooheys 1000, won by Jim Richards and Mark Skaife in a Nissan GT-R.

Going through my old tapes, when I reached the presentation ceremony at the end of the race, I rediscovered the footage that reveals why Paul Morris is called “Dude”. He (in yellow) and Geoff Full (in white) won the 1600cc and Under class that day, and were duly presented on the podium as such. Here is their “effort” on the podium with Channel Seven’s Garry Wilkinson:

I remember when watching it live on the day – when Morris in particular was largely unknown – that these two were obviously excited for their result, but also that they were a tad on the “odd” side. For evermore, Paul Morris was known as “Dude”!

There have been many changes at Mount Panorama in recent years. A new pit complex. A massive hotel/convention centre at the bottom of Conrod Straight. A new bridge over Pit Straight. Regular track resurfacing.

However, the year the biggest changes occurred was 1987, when the Bathurst 1000 became a round of the now-defunct original World Touring Car Championship.
