Everybody loved Jason. Always happy, always smiling.

He might only have won a single race in his V8 Supercar career – (at Winton in 2006) – but we loved him because he was always having a red hot go, no matter where he was in the field.

One of his most memorable charges was at the 2003 Sandown 500, where he made a lunge at leader Mark Skaife on the penultimate lap.

He didn’t get the pass done, but he showed his passion for what he was doing over the radio after it became clear the car wouldn’t get out of the sand.

That’s the passion we loved in Jason Richards.

And why we’ll miss him.

RIP Jase.

…how would a NASCAR driver do in V8 Supercar?

I think they would do extremely well, and in fact it has already happened.

Of course, Boris Said has had a few runs in our cars, but what about the top drivers? Here’s Dale Earnhardt Jr testing a PMM V8 Supercar at Queensland Raceway in the 2008 off-season.

For a first drive, not bad – the car still had the old H-pattern gear shift, was almost certainly running on old tyres, and was on a track Earnhardt had never seen before.

Jimmie Johnson in a HRT Commodore versus Carl Edwards in an FPR Falcon?

It is often stated by people who do not understand, that motor sport is not really a sport, that all competitors do is drive an engine around in a car all day, around and around in circles. Of course, racing drivers are among some of the fittest athletes on the planet.

And some of the bravest. For example, have a look at some brief wet weather highlights of the most recent V8 Supercars event, held today at Sandown International Raceway:

Many motor sport categories involved in banked oval track racing – (such as NASCAR) – due to higher centrifugal forces, are suspended when it rains. Many road racing series stick it out with wet weather tyres.

Bravery to the extreme.

In recent weeks, we have seen a number of fatal accidents in various forms of motor sport. Given the high safety standards employed in the sport these days, fortunately, such situations are few and far between.

Indeed, where fatalities were common in the early years of the sport, they are most uncommon in the modern era. This is why the motor racing community is in such shock, to have two high profile deaths in quick succession.

High profile or not, every death is felt deeply.

With the recent NASCAR incident involving Kyle Busch and Ron Hornaday fresh in our minds, I have personally been contemplating just what could have happened in that incident.

A similar style of impact that was endured by Hornaday claimed the life of Dale Earnhardt Sr in 2001:

The structure of cars, and other ancillary safety systems has improved dramatically, even in the ten years since – and we thought the cars were super safe back then.

What we learn from these accidents helps the authorities take action to make sure they don’t happen again. Systems such as the HANS device were introduced to most major forms of racing as a direct result of accidents like Earnhardt’s.

As for what Kyle Busch did, without a HANS device, what might have happened to Hornaday, given the similarities to Earnhardt’s crash? One accident and what we learn from it can prevent injury or death from the next similar accident.

However, it’s not just the obvious things that can take a driver from us, such as the heart attack that claimed 1967 Formula One champion Denny Hulme at the 1992 Bathurst 1000:

Denny was one of my heroes, and it was heartbreaking to watch his life end, live on television in front of my eyes. He had reported on the radio that he didn’t feel well, and was suffering from blurred vision. A silent time bomb nobody knew about.

For this reason, the health and fitness of drivers is a critical safety factor that is taken into consideration.

The lesson is there for all of us – whether we be racing drivers or not – take care, look after yourself, and look after others on the roads.

The simplest things can take away more than we realise.

I don’t watch a lot of NASCAR – the difference in time zones between Australia’s east coast and the US usually lands the races on our TVs at around 4am.

As I don’t watch a huge amount, I don’t know a huge amount about NASCAR. However, one thing I have noticed is that in recent years whenever something controversial or dangerous happens, it seems to involve one man.

Kyle Busch.

Here is his latest effort:

As a result, Busch was parked immediately in this race, and for the Nationwide and Sprint Cup races this weekend.

It actually reminds me of a similar incident that occurred in V8 Supercars in 2002 between Paul Romano and Rodney Forbes.

Forbes had punted Romano heading into Honda Corner at Phillip Island in what appeared to be a fairly standard braking incident. Romano however, took it into his own hands to “pay back” Forbes for the incident.

Romano’s penalty was 150 point championship points – certainly the largest I can remember before or since. It also left him with the dubious honour of being the only driver in championship history to finish on negative points.

He made only a small handful of appearances in the series ever again.

Kyle Busch might not be blown out of the NASCAR series just yet, but hot-headed revenge acts have no place in a sport like motor racing.

Given the recent deaths of Dan Wheldon and Marco Simoncelli, safety should be first and foremost in everyone’s mind.

And this was just dumb and dangerous – no matter however Busch wants to spin it.

Over the last few years, people constantly complain about the amount of advertising the Seven Network puts on during its motor racing telecasts. I don’t actually think it’s too bad, and have shown here and here that the amount is not really all that different than it was 25 years ago, or at any time in between.

Midst the 2010 broadcast of the Bathurst 1000, Seven did controversially “time slip” the coverage to show more of the race. While they did achieve that, it was the wrong thing to do, and some broadcasting rules were changed to stop them from doing it again.

Indeed, the 2011 race remained completely live throughout.

Many of the complainers say that Network Ten – (who held the rights between 1997 and 2006) – should get them back again, because they “never did anything like that”.

Oh really? So what did they do here in their 1997 broadcast of the then Primus Bathurst 1000 Classic?

Well, clearly before the commercial break shown in this footage, the Tomas Mezera car was already deeply bunkered in the sand trap at the bottom of The Chase. As the network threw to the break, they were on lap 27 of the race.

Cue three and a half minute commercial break. Back from the break, we have a minute and a half of race update. So it is at least five minutes since the incident, and still they haven’t shown it, and we are up to lap 30.

So how long had the car actually been in the sand trap?

After 14 years, it is difficult to say precisely, but according to the official lap chart of the race from the Dorian timing system, the last lap the 47 car completed was lap 25.

So it actually happened on lap 26 – four laps before they actually showed it.

The sole leader throughout this period was Peter Brock, with laps of 2:14.1457, 2:13.9709, 2:13.5204, 2:14.2344, and 2:13.6238 between laps 26 and 30 – a total of 11 minutes and 7 seconds – give or take one lap depending on exactly where on the lap Mezera was in comparison to Brock when the accident occurred.

Eleven minutes?

One of the most iconic and most often replayed incidents in the fifty year history of the race – and they missed it by eleven minutes? And pretended that it was live?

Don’t be so sure about just how good a job Channel Ten used to do!

The second day of the Gold Coast 600 was controversial, with the kerb hopping detection system – (effectively a timing loop embedded in the kerbs) – copping the flack for being apparently inaccurate.

A number of drivers were clearly jumping kerbs and not being penalised, while others who didn’t seem to be jumping them were being penalised.

Most notable was the Holden Racing Team car number one, which was ordered in for a penalty under huge protest from the team, who were insistent that driver Darren Turner was not jumping the kerbs.

So what did THAT email say? (Click for larger view).

“I cannot complain more vehemently about this .. the cars in front are doing the same as our driver and they are not getting triggers .. the systems operation is very questionable and this decision will destroy our race .. we will comply .. but under extreme protest…”

Of course, Race Control responded with:

“Penalty stands or the car will be excluded.”

What I find interesting from the email HRT sent to the stewards, they didn’t say they hadn’t jumped the kerbs, just that “the cars in front are doing the same”.

They are of course right in saying that they shouldn’t have been penalised if everyone else isn’t.

Time to get the kerb hopping sensors sorted out, before rubbish like this happens again.
